Igor SegaVisokotemperaturni kuprati: koherentni efekti v spinskem odzivu
V seminarski sobi odsekov za fiziko (106)
V konvencionalnih superprevodnih materialih interakcijo med sparjenimi elektroni posredujejo fononi, a stevilni eksperimenti na materialih novejse dobe, na kratko kupratih, pri katerih je temperatura prehoda v superprevodno stanje precej visja, tja do 130 K, kazejo na veliko, ce ze ne odlocilno vlogo spinskih eksitacij, kot mediatorjev interakcije parjenja. V omejenem temperaturnem podrocju nad temperaturo prehoda in pod njo se pojavi ostra resonanca v spinskem odzivu, katere znacilnosti so tesno povezane z drugimi kolicinami, ki karakterizirajo prehod v superprevodno stanje. V predavanju bo opisan nastanek resonance v okviru modela t-J mocno koreliranih elektronov, njene lastnosti in odprti problemi, vezani na vprasanje posredovanja interakcije parjenja.

Antonio ŠiberElectrostatics in the assembly of single-stranded RNA viruses
I shall discuss the role of electrostatic interactions in the assembly of single-stranded RNA viruses. Both the viral proteins and the ssRNA molecule carry certain charge at physiological pH. Viral proteins are typically positively charged, while RNA molecule is highly negatively charged. The attractive interactions are screened by salt ions always present in physiological solutions. The electrostatic interactions between the proteins, RNA and salt ions are studied in a mean-field Poisson-Boltzmann framework. The total free energy fuctional describing the viral assembly includes also the entropic random-walk-like contribution of the RNA polyelectrolyte to the total free energy of the system. The virus is thus viewed as an entity that, in addition to optimizing certain evolutionary constraints, also minimizes the free energy functional.

Joern Kersten (ICTP)Can LHC Test the See-Saw Mechanism?

In the tea room of F-1 department.

We consider the prospects for detecting right-handed (Standard Model singlet) neutrinos introduced in the see-saw mechanism at future accelerators. This requires sufficiently large mixing of these neutrinos with the left-handed neutrinos, which is only possible if contributions from different right-handed neutrinos to the light neutrino mass matrix cancel at a level of 10^-8. We search for possible symmetries behind this cancellation. Light neutrino masses can be generated as a result of small perturbations related to violation of these symmetries. The impact of these perturbations on LHC physics is however negligible so that the mechanism of neutrino mass generation and LHC physics are essentially decoupled in general. Under additional assumptions about symmetry breaking some correlation can appear between the collider observables and features of the neutrino mass matrix.

V uvodnem delu bomo na kratko predstavili smeri sodobnih raziskav kompleksnih omrezij v fiziki, predvsem v okviru raziskav kompleksnih dinamicnih sistemov.
V nadaljevanju bomo obravnavali modele transporta na omrezjih in predstavili rezultate numericnih simulacij na dveh razlicnih omrezjih. Dolocili bomo fizikalne kolicine, s pomocjo katerih natancno karakteriziramo procese transporta, ter pokazali odvisnost le-teh od relevantnih parametrov in strukture nosilnega omrezja.

Genetic Algorithms are powerful optimisation methods, that have been meanwhile applied in several problems in soft matter physics with much success. In finding ordered minimum energy configurations (MECs) of a given system, a genetic algorithm allows for an unbiased and parameter-free search among all possible lattices by freely optimising the lattice parameters with respect to the energy of the structure. In this way, the risk of overlooking possible candidate structures can be completely avoided. Having indications about its rich variety of ordered equilibrium structures, we started to investigate the two-dimensional square shoulder system. In dependence on the range of the shoulder, we indeed find a broad variety of MECs. Notably among them are clusters and lane-like structures, that have their origin in the two competing length scales of the system, namely the hard-core diameter and the length of the shoulder. Convinced by the performance of our algorithm in the one-component case, we extended our method to binary mixtures. We test the power of our enhanced method on a system that is readily realisable in experiments: a two-dimensional mixture of dipolar colloidal particles. A rich wealth of structures is identified, the complexity of which grows for increasing asymmetry between the two components and with increasing concentration of small particles.

Predstavljena bo teorija anomalnega obnasanja transportnih kolicin v kvantnih integrabilnih sistemih. Primer sta spinska prevodnost in toplotna prevodnost v anizotropnem Heisenbergovem modelu. V zadnjih letih so bili odkriti tudi materiali, ki kazejo zelo veliko in anizotropno toplotno prevodnostq elektronskega izvora. Slednji so tudi predmet raziskav v okviru EU projekta NOVMAG. Odprti teoreticni problemi so predvsem vloga neurejenosti in sklopitev s fononi.

Teoreticno proucimo nekatere vidike strukture ploskovitih skupkov lipidnih vesiklov. Privzamemo, da so vesikli pokoncne prizme, katerih osnovna ploskev je zaobljen konveksni poligon: tedaj skupna elasticna in adhezijska energija ni odvisna od stevila oglisc osnovne ploskve. Na porazdelitev vesiklov po stevilu oglisc, ki je v pravih bioloskih tkivih znacilno zvonasta, vplivata nabor moznih oblik vesiklov in pogoj, da le-ti pokrijejo ravnino. Z analizo faznega prostora poligonov ugotovimo, kako na strukturo skupka vpliva nabor oblik, s simulacijo rasti ploskovitega skupka pa raziscemo zgradbo skupka, ki pokrije ravnino.

Za opis dinamicnih lastnosti spojine CeIn_3 sem priredil numericno metodo, ki opisuje gibanje ene vrzeli v Neelovem ozadju. Uporabil sem tridimenzionalni t-J model, ki je izpeljan iz enopasovnega Hubbardovega modela in je definiran na neskoncni mrezi. Generacija baze poteka preko veckratnega delovanja izvendiagonalnih clenov Hamiltonijana na izbrano zacetno stanje. Pri tem eksplicitno upostevamo translacijsko simetrijo problema. Izracunal sem diperzijsko obliko osnovnega energijskega pasu za zunanje elektrone spojine ter utez kvazidelca. Parametre modela sem izbral tako, da je minimum disperzijske relacije v tocki (pi/2,pi/2,pi/2). Z uporabo Lanczosovega algoritma za diagonalizacijo Hamiltonijana sistema sem izracunal spektralno funkcijo za eno vrzel A_k(omega). Analiziral sem lego in spektralno utez koherentnih vrhov ter raziskal obliko nekoherentnega dela spektra. Dolocil sem tudi vpliv magnetne sklopitve na efektivno maso kvazidelca.

Ilja DorsnerThe See-saw Mechanism Predictions Within The SU(5) Framework
I will discuss recent advancements in our understanding of simple models of grand unification within the SU(5) framework. In particular, I will compare a number of very specific models that primarily differ from each other by the mechanism of neutrino mass generation. I will outline their generic predictions and discuss their testability in some detail. In fact, I will argue that most of them have interesting signatures that can show up in the collider experiments as well as in proton decay search facilities. These correlations might allow not only for them to be falsified but also verified if and when proton decay is detected. more...

I discuss the QCD factorization formula for B -> V gamma decays, where V is a light vector meson, within the framework of soft-collinear effective theory (SCET). In particular, I review the SCET derivation of the QCD factorization formula for these decays and discuss the calculation of the perturbative hard-scattering kernels at NNLO (alpha_s2). The numerical impact of these higher-order corrections on the branching fractions is estimated, and the results are compared with the current experimental data. more...

Abstract: A large number of complex networks, both natural and artificial, share the presence of highly heterogeneous,scale-free degree distributions.We investigate if two networks are similar or not by examining their local characteristics.The local structure of networks is measured by counting the frequency of subgraphs of a given type.The exhaustive search of subgraphs in a large network is computationally prohibitively expensive. For this reason the World Wide Web, social networks,and biological networks of higher organisms, require the development of efficient heuristic approaches allowing counting of subgraphs by an incomplete search.Here we report on the comparison of efficiencies of two heuristic algorithms, based on random and preferential choices of the subset of studied nodes. Both were applied to scale-free networks, generated using the Barabasi - Albert algorithm, to count subgraphs with up to four nodes. Abstract: The efficient numerical evaluation of path integrals represent one of the most challenging problems. A newly developed analytical method has made it possible to systematically accelerate numerical calculation of generic transition amplitudes in the path integral formalism by many orders of magnitude by constructing a hierarchy of effective actions SN(p) for N-fold discretized theory where level p effective actions improves convergence of discretized transition amplitudes to the continuum limit from 1/N to 1/Np [A. Bogojević, A. Balaž, A. Belić, Phys. Rev. Lett. 94 (2005) 180403, Phys. Rev. B 72 (2005) 064302, Phys. Lett. A 344 (2005) 84]. Here we extend the applicability of the above method to the calculation of energy expectation values by constructing analytical expressions for energy estimators of a general theory for each level p. As a result of this, energy expectation values converge to the continuum as 1/Np. By performing a series of Monte Carlo simulations on several different models we demonstrate that the analytical results do indeed hold. more...

Location: Seminarska soba F1 Modern theoretical biophysics aims to quantitatively model how individual biological components work together on the level of biological systems. On the other hand, bioinformatics, which aims to develop methods for accurate analysis of biological data, can clearly benefit from physical understanding of the underlying biological processes. In this talk, I will address both theoretical modeling of biological systems and biophysics approach to bioinformatic problems, through specific research examples in the area of regulation of gene expression. Specifically, the first part of the talk will address how RNA polymerase is initiating gene transcription. The first quantitative model for the open complex formation (the first step in the transcription initiation) will be presented. In the second part of the talk, the problem of detection of binding sites of transcription factors in genomic DNA will be addressed. It will be shown how physical modeling of the relevant biological experiments can significantly improve both the experimental design and bioinformatic procedure for inferring protein-DNA interaction parameters. Both biological and quantitative backgroung will be given, and the talk should be accessible to both physical and biological scientists.

The necessary and sufficient conditions for scale invariance, and the way in which it might be controlled are elaborated.

Prof. Sergei Kruchinin Two-gap superconductivity in Mg2

Recent discovery of superconductivity in MgB2 attracted great interest in multi-gap superconductivity. We use our two-band model for the explanation of two coupled superconductivity gaps in MgB2 and to study the effect of increasing Tc in MgB2, which is due to the enhanced interband pair scattering. We also investigate properties of nanosize two-gap superconductivity by using a two-sublevel model in the framework of a mean field approximation. I will pesent a model corresponding to a nanosize two-gap superconductivity and analytically derive the partition function of the nanosize system by using a path integral approach. We will also discuss the condensation energy and parity gap of the two-gap superconductivity and relation of their size dependence with two bulk gaps and effective pair scattering process between two sublevels.

Hrvoje StefancicComposite dark energy - towards the solution of the cosmological coincidence problem
The accelerated expansion of the present universe represents one of the most intriguing questions for modern cosmology and theoretical physics. Although the candidate mechanisms for the explanation of the acceleration are both numerous and diverse, the concept of dark energy, a negative pressure component of the universe, plays a central role in the analysis of the acceleration phenomenon. Apart from the unknown source of the acceleration, at the present epoch of the evolution of the universe the energy densities of the dark energy component and the nonrelativistic matter component are of the same order of magnitude. Since these two components scale quite differently with the expansion of the universe, this fact is also referred to as the cosmological coincidence problem. We present a cosmological model with composite dark energy and present it as a possible solution to the said coincidence problem. In these models, the dark energy sector contains two components: a variable cosmological term and a generic dynamical X component. In this setting it is possible to have a negative cosmological term which ultimately stops the expansion of the universe. The ratio of energy densities of dark energy and nonrelativistic matter remains of order 1 for a range of model parameters, which characterizes the present value of this ratio as natural in these models. Iztok PizornKvantna zvestoba v dvodelcnih ensemblih slucajnih matrik
Obcutljivost kvantnega razvoja na perturbacije opise mera zvestoba (Quantum Fidelity), katere hitrost pojemanja je med drugim odvisna tudi od vrste perturbacij. Predstavil bom obravnavo stabilnosti priblizka povprecnega polja (MFA) na vecdelcnem fermionskem modelu z najvec dvodelcnimi interakcijami v ogrodju teorije slucajnih matrik. Izkaze se namrec, da za MFA, kjer perturbacija nima diagonalnih prispevkov, kvantna zvestoba tipiv cno `zamrzne` na visokem nivoju, kar pomeni dolgotrajno stabilnost casovnega razvoja. Iz principov taksnega obnasanja bi lahko razlozili uspesnost priblizkov povprecnega polja.

In recent years, single-electron conduction through the nanoparticle films under the conditions of Coulomb blockade has been studied in connection with the nanotechnology applications. The most interesting feature in these systems is the nonlinear current--voltage characteristics and its dependence on the nanoparticle arrangements. In this seminar I will introduce the numerical model for different structures of nanoparticle films and the electron-tunneling conduction through these structures. I will present the results for the I(V) curves and the statistical properties of the conduction paths through these films.

Landau in Luttinger sta pokazala, da so lastnosti Fermijeve tekocine dolocene z Fermijevo povrsino njihovih ekscitacij. Pri non-Fermi liquid sistemih pa ni dobro definiranih ekscitacij in so zato karakterizirani z analogom Fermijeve povrsine - Luttingerjevo povrsino, ki je dolocena z niclami enodelcne Greenove funkcije. Predstavil bom Luttingerjev teorem in njegovo aplikacijo na sistemih mocno koreliranih elektronov, ter se pri tem vprasal ali teorem drzi ali ne.

Rafael PortoEffective Field Theory and the problem of Motion in GR
The problem of motion in General Relativity has lost its academic status and become an active research area since the next generation of gravity wave detectors will rely upon its solution. The difficulties in finding the full solution stem from the many different scales involved in the problem: the internal structure (finite size effects), the orbit scale and the long wavelength gravitational radiation. Here we will show how ideas borrowed from effective field theory in condensed matter and particle physics can be used to solve the problem of motion in a systematic fashion, one scale at the time, from a Wilsonian point of view. We then use this new approach to calculate the third order post-Newtonian correction to the spin-spin potential between two spinning bodies, e.g. the hyperfine Einstein-Infeld-Hoffmann potential. This correction represents the first contribution to the spin-spin interaction due to the non-linear nature of General Relativity. Other applications are also discussed. Holographic imaging of nucleon via deeply virtual Compton scattering and conformal symmetry The standard description of quarkonic and gluonic content of nucleon, in terms of parton distribution functions (PDFs), contains only information about distribution of longitudinal nucleon momentum among the partons. More general, ``three-dimensional\'\' description is offered by generalized parton distributions (GPDs). After introduction to GPDs, it will be shown how to extract them from deeply virtual Compton scattering data, and how to employ conformal symmetry in calculation of radiative corrections to this process. Napredek v meritvah transporta skozi nanostrukture in tehnika DMFT, ki preslika problem sklopljenega sistema elektronov na mrezi na samousklajen problem kvantne necistoce sta v zadnjih letih ponovno obudila zanimanje za problematiko kvantnih necistoc. V seminarju si bomo ogledali, kako sklopitev na nihajne prostostne stopnje vpliva na nizko-temperaturne lastnosti modelov kvantnih necistoc. Prikazal bom tudi metodo projekcijskih operatorjev, ki ob zmernem numericnem naporu omogoca izracun staticnih korelacijskih funkcij in linearne prevodnosti in s tem neposredno primerjavo z eksperimenti, ki se izvajajo na nanostrukturah.

Problem visokotemperaturne superprevodnosti ostaja neresen tudi po 20 letih intenzivnih raziskav. Obstaja prepricanje, da naj bi razumevanje anomalnega obnasanja takega sistema nad samo superprevodno fazo vodilo k pojasnitvi mehanizma, ki povezuje elektrona v Cooperjevem paru. Pomanjkanje ucinkovitih metod za resevanje problema mocno koreliranih elektronov se vedno uvrsca Lanczosevo diagonalizacijo koncnih sistemov med uspesnejse algoritme za raziskovanje tega podrocja. V seminarju bo predstavljen Lanczosev algoritem in njegova izpeljanka pri koncnih temperaturah. Uporaba periodicnih robnih pogojev z zasukom (twist) omogoca zvezno sprehajanje po Brillouinovi coni in tako poveca locljivost izracuna kolicin v momentnem prostoru. Predstavljen bo pojav reducirane Fermijeve povrsine (zepi) v blizini Mottovega prehoda in s tem povezane psevdoreze ter asimetrija faznega diagrama glede na vrzelsko-elektronsko dopiranje izolatorja.

Abstract: A numerical double-slit experiment recently performed by G.Casati and T.Prosen suggested a possibility of phase-coherence loss of a quantum state due to its (classically) chaotic motion. Along the same lines we construct another double-slit experiment considering a comparison of wave-packet scattering through a chaotic and a regular system. While the scattering output in the case of regular system features known double-slit interference pattern, the pattern is destroyed in the chaotic case indicating the occurrence of phase-decoherence. This confirms the previous findings and establishes a rather strong connection between quantum dephasing and the chaotic dynamics.

Abstract: Starting from the opposite of the Nagaoka-Thouless theorem, which predicts ferromagnetism for the ground state of a U=∞ Hubbard model with a single hole, we have investigated the case of the reversed hopping parameter on a non-bipartite lattice, namely the two-dimensional triangular lattice. This situation has subtle implications for the ground state and the low-energy excitations of frustrated lattices. We then discuss the consequences for finite temperatures and dopings of both static and transport properties, such as the Hall-coefficient. Furthermore, we address the applicability of this model to the compound Sodium Cobalt Oxide, especially the Curie-Weiss phase.
