Since 1999 brane world models have become
very popular. But in the introductory sections of many papers we
often read about " ... a new idea that our world
is a 4-dimensional surface in a higher dimensional space". This
is not quite correct, because that idea is not new. What is new is the
particular model due to Randall and Sundrum.
However, more careful authors do not commit such
mistake
and they provide citations to older works, such as those by Akama,
Gibbons,
Visser. Unfortunately, they still ascribe the idea of brane world
exclusively to the above authors and do not mention that there
exist other old works discussing the idea of brane world from various
points
of view. Such a biased citation practice is normally not
encountered
in other fields of research, where at least in larger papers and
reviews
citations tend to be as exhaustive and complete as possible.
